Tech courses in the sights of professionals for a ‘plus’ in selection processes
While the professional may have experience on some of these topics, it is necessary that they can obtain certificates that support this knowledge.
In a reality where technology advances by leaps and bounds, Peruvian and also international companies are looking for professionals who advance at the same pace.
In view of this, many professionals have opted to study courses related to technology (Tech courses) and thus be attractive in the selection processes, says to gestion.pe the Senior Manager, Tech & Innovation Division Peru, Mexico & Ecuador – Cornerstone, Felipe Valdez.
He explained that just as there are professional careers that are studied and are very specific, there are other learning or skills that professionals can have to complement the role they are currently having in the company.
“They are like a ‘plus’ that they can have as learning to be able to have a more attractive professional profile because companies are increasingly looking for just this type of skills in a general way, not necessarily in a specific way for studies they may have had or experience, but because it is transversal for technological positions,” he said.
For this year, according to the executive, the demand of companies for professionals with studies in technology courses will increase by 35%. In that sense, he said that companies find it more attractive to hire a person who already has experience or knowledge in an innovative work methodology, before hiring a person who does not.
Thus, he detailed that among the courses most requested by companies in their candidates are: Agile Project Management, User Experience Design (UX), Cybersecurity, Testing, Cloud Computing, Digital Marketing, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning and Data Analysis.
“For professionals who already studied a career and want to complete their profile, they can study some cybersecurity or User Experience (UX) course,” he commented.
Backing it up with a certification
Valdez points out that while the professional may have expertise on some of these topics, they need to be able to obtain certificates to back up this knowledge.
“In the end, companies are looking for what they need most and more and more the need is felt that candidates must come with these developed skills and even candidates must prove they took a course and have a certification to back up that candidacy. It is not enough to say that they did teach you (a certain subject), you must have the knowledge from an academic point of view and always having an experience adds up to much more,” he said.
In this way, he said that professionals have been interested in taking these Tech courses and in fact they do it in three ways.
The first, self-taught or via free courses; and the second, online or face-to-face, where you do have to pay for tuition and monthly fees; and the third, by participating in Bootcamps, short intensive programs, lasting between three and six months, focused on practical learning.
“Nowadays these courses are like English. If you don’t speak it, the professional will miss out on a lot of opportunities from companies that are requiring this type of personnel, it’s the same with these courses,” he said.
Courses become careers
For his part, Gerardo Sarmiento, professor of Networks and Communications at Cibertec, agreed that short courses (between 3 and 4 months) are more in demand by Peruvian professionals, mainly by those who already have knowledge on a certain subject.
In dialogue with gestion.pe he said that these courses are very specific, such as Digital Transformation, Programming or Business Intelligence and Data Science, which are the most demanded.
“These courses are totally free and are taken by professionals who already have experience, are working and want to strengthen and expand their knowledge. Today an IT or computer personnel, not only has to be trained in information technology, which used to be the basics, today it is important that they are trained in computer security or cybersecurity,” he said.
He indicated that such is the interest of professionals to take the technology courses that now the number of specialties has been expanded, all of them from the mother career: Systems Engineering.
In the case of Cibertec, the Technology and Information (IT) courses have three modalities: online, classroom and self-instructional. The most demanded course is Data Analytics Power BI, where data analytics is managed.
The specialist in Cybersecurity at Cibertec also said that in the last 5 years technical careers in Cybersecurity or Data Science have started to be opened, a fact that 20 years ago did not happen.
In this line, he indicated that the new technology courses that are taught today could also become a career as such in the coming years. Currently, the careers linked to Technology have a duration of 3 years and have two modalities: hybrid and face-to-face.
