Innovation Day: How Can We Develop Innovative and Disruptive Leaders?

According to Cornerstone, 4 out of 5 leaders who innovate have a direct and positive influence on fostering a growth mindset within their teams.

In a world increasingly dominated by rapid technological evolution and constant market changes, the ability to innovate is not only a desirable skill but an imperative for organizational success and sustainability. But what about corporate leaders—are they innovating?

According to Enori Larrabure, Talent Management Manager at Cornerstone: “We face a major challenge as a country: corporate leaders are not being empowered to innovate. Innovation and Creativity Day is an important date to remind us that leaders are the primary drivers of constant innovation.”

As the expert noted, “Innovation in leadership involves more than just adopting new technologies; it’s about fostering a culture that values creativity, calculated risk-taking, and the ability to think beyond traditional boundaries while losing the fear of making mistakes.”

According to the specialist, these are the steps to develop innovative and disruptive leaders:

  • Understand how they will influence the business. Developing leaders who embrace innovation means investing in an organizational culture that is more open to change and more flexible toward different generations and their evolving needs; furthermore, they influence their teams. “Four out of five leaders who innovate have a direct and positive influence on fostering a growth mindset within their teams,” notes Enori Larrabure.
  • Review the organizational culture. It is important that the company’s culture aligns with business expectations and a commitment to constant innovation. “More than 40% of companies that turn to Cornerstone for a Leadership & Innovation program do not have leaders whose behaviors align with the values that define the organizational culture.”
  • Develop Skills. Work on internal (team) and external (stakeholders) communication, and develop capabilities that allow them to inspire their teams to reach new horizons and, most importantly, be willing to learn from failures to drive future success.
  • Empowerment. “It is essential to empower leaders to make decisions and propose new initiatives. This paves the way for constant innovation—and even disruption—that allows them to become market leaders,” notes the expert.

Cornerstone has positively impacted more than 2,000 corporate leaders in 2023 through the Leadership & Innovation Program. “Our role has been to empower corporate leaders to drive the advancement of their businesses, developing skills and enhancing their capabilities to transform challenges into opportunities,” concludes the expert.
